Stuffed Newspaper Butterfly
Materials
Newspaper

Paint of various colors. You can use red, white and blue and then mix the various colors to produce pink and purple

Something to sew up the sides, stapler or a hole punch with string or wool

Instructions

Take four full sheets of newspaper and lay them on top of each other. Keep in mind that it is easier to use just black and white pages for the top and bottom because they are easier to paint over than colored newspaper.

Fold the newspaper in half diagonally so that the newspapers form a triangle.

Staple up one of the sides or use a hole punch to punch holes and then use string or wool to sew up the sides.

Open up the pouch that is you just created and stuff it full of crumbled up newspaper.

Now staple or sew shut the other side.

Repeat the entire process to make a second triangle or butterfly wing.

Now take two more full sheets of newspaper and fold it in half. This time you want to fold it in the shape of a rectangle. Fold it half again so that you make a body shape.

Staple or sew all the way around two sides.

Open up the body and stuff it full of crumbled newspaper.

Staple or sew the third side shut.

Paint the butterfly wings a base color.

Allow to dry.

Add a second coat if needed.

Paint the butterfly body a base color.

Decorate the wings using sponges or even cut potatoes with paints.

Allow to dry.

Fold a piece of white paper in half and cut out a circle., you will have two identical circles.

Paint or color them like eyeballs and glue them to the body.

Cut out a mouth and paint or color it and glue it to the body.

Staple the wings onto the body .

Hang the butterfly up from the ceiling or on the wall.

Thumbprint Caterpillar and Butterfly Craft

Materials

Paper

A variety of colors of tempera paint or finger paints. Just keep in mind that if you use more than two colors you will need to wash your hands in between times

Black marker

Instructions

Dip your finger into the colored paint that you desire and make the pictures on the paper by pressing your thumb to the paper. Here are some ideas that you can use to get started:

Make a caterpillar by alternating colors with your thumbprints and placing them in a row.

A thumbprint flower use 4 prints for the petals and two prints for the leaves.

A thumbprint butterfly 4 prints of the same color or you can use 2 colors one for the top wings and one for the bottom wings.

A thumbprint sun, a bunch of prints in a circle.

A thumbprint bush, prints in a bunch.

Thumbprint grass, thumbprints in a row, laying sideways.

You can use single thumbprints and draw bug legs and faces on them.

For your less experienced crafters use a pencil to make a small mark on the paper as to where they are going to want to place their thumbprints, this helps them do it themselves and let's the caterpillars look like caterpillars.

Allow to dry.

Take a black marker and draw legs and a face on the caterpillar, draw a stem and center on the flower, and draw an antenna and a body on the butterfly.
