Tips For Choosing a Good Beginner Knitting Pattern

When you are just learning to knit you are very eager and anxious to get making items other than garter knit scarves. Many people are tempted to jump into a pattern that is beyond their knitting skill level and as a result they become discouraged and often just give up. The key to success is not to expect to be an expert right off the bat.

What you should be doing is selecting a pattern that matches your skill level. This will ensure you have a pleasant knitting experience and learn new techniques as you go along. Most patterns will list the skill level for the pattern. Choose only those for Easy or Beginner levels. Although socks and hats are not that difficult, if you are not totally comfortable with knitting on two needles it may not be a good idea to attempt double pointed needles just yet.

You should find a pattern or website that will give you good beginner patterns with clear instructions. Read over the pattern first. If you do not understand a term used in the pattern and they do not fully explain the abbreviations then perhaps you should tuck that one away for later when you are more accomplished in the craft.

There are many, many knitting patterns that are suitable for your skill level. You just have to find a website that offers instruction for beginners. Sign up for their newsletter and send them an email with a question. If you get a reply within 24-48 hours with helpful answers to your questions then stick with them. They will be a huge help if you run into trouble with any pattern or technique you are not familiar with. My subscribers email me all the time and I am happy to answer their questions.

Find a friend who is an experienced knitter and ask if they would be willing to help you advance your skills. Local knitting groups are also great sources. These groups usually have knitters of all skill levels as members and the more advanced knitters are generally eager to help out newbies. They will also likely have a pattern stash specifically for beginners that they will share with you.
